CCTV cameras captured footage of the boy being pursued and forced into a car after he picked up about $70 in cash, police say.
Two men and a woman have been charged with murder, kidnapping and other offences in the death of a 13-year-old Detroit boy.
Gregory Walker is accused of choking Deontae Mitchell to death with help from Lillian Roberts and Earnest Coleman, authorities said.
Deontae's body was found earlier this month in a vacant city lot.
An official cause of death is still under investigation.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said on Thursday the details in the boy's killing "shocked" authorities.
A cousin told investigators that Deontae had picked up about $70 in cash dropped by a man outside of a market on 31 May.
Police said CCTV cameras captured footage of the boy on his bicycle being pursued by a man, who grabbed Deontae's arm and forced him into a car.
Ms Worthy said there was "no excuse" for what happened to Deontae regardless of the circumstances.
Walker, Roberts and Coleman faces charges of murder, unlawful imprisonment, kidnapping, torture and gun crimes.
All three were due to appear in court on Thursday.
