Chelsea will request a financial settlement of several million pounds from Manchester United to pass on the trademark for Jose Mourinho, which the club have owned since 2006.
Chelsea first filed to have Mourinho’s trademark for 20 years in March 2005, Chelsea retailed ownership of it throughout his subsequent spells at Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
Manchester United chief
executive Ed Woodward wants the rights to Jose Mourinho’s image and that
is what has been holding up the deal over the past 48 hours.
Chelsea's ownership of Mourinho trademark will not hinder his appointment at the Old Trafford, which is excpected later this week after the Portuguese agreed a personal terms on a three-year contract worth 12 million pounds a year after negotiation in London.
But United will seek to resolve the issue as soon as possible as being denied the use of his name would severely restrict their ability to exploit of one of the most iconic figures in the world of sport for their own commercial purposes.
